Seeds of Change.jpg

More on the food revolution, from the 1990s on, decades of alternative agriculture, food & health, a movement and eco-community that now ranges across the world, looking at the essentials, seed, soil, water, local control, sustainability, productivity, resilience and generational wealth and cultual preservation... from humble farm fields, market gardens and farmers markets, to "peak of the season" fresh foods, creating a "New American cuisine" and international traditions now featured in fine and famous restaurants, ethnic cooking and home cooking. A Seeds of Change vision has arrived and here we are working the fields...

Seeds of Change: The Living Treasure

The Passionate Story of the Growing Movement to Restore Biodiversity and Revolutionize the Way We Think About Food
By Kenny Ausubel, co-founder of The Bioneers'

And a special thanks from GreenPolicy360's siterunner to Kenny Ausubel for his words of appreciation in the Acknowledgment -- Steven Schmidt was seminal in midwifing this book, acting wisely throughout as an agent, enzyme, mentor and friend...

Reviewed by Library Journal - 1994

Filmmaker, writer, and entrepreneur Ausubel has written an engaging, informative, and often quite personal account of the founding and beginning years of Seeds of Change, a new company...

Much more than a narrative of a seed company and its founders, this is really a story about biodiversity.

Ausubel passionately believes that individual gardeners can play a vital role in saving uncommon yet meritorious varieties of fruits and vegetables, grains, flowers, and herbs.

Seeds of Change offerings are traditional, nonhybrid varieties, meaning they will, unlike hybrids, breed true to the parents and can be harvested by gardeners and passed on from generation to generation.

Although readers may not always agree with the author's wide-ranging views on American business and society, ecology, anthropology, nutrition, and other topics, this is a thought-provoking and timely book.

Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.

More:

Fascinating book describes the author's discovery of heirloom seeds and traditional farming methods. Though the book is written about starting a heirloom seed company -- it is really about food, farming, health, philosophy, big business, bio diversity, environment, nature, history, community, and what makes life worthwhile.

Filled with stories and facts that make the topic come alive. Straightforward writing style makes it easy to share the author's passion for a more honest and natural way of life.

Highly recommended for anyone of any age.

Years after the launching of Bioneers, Kenny wrote of Steven Schmidt as "modest" and so he wanted to describe some of Steven's early contributions that helped the success of the Bioneers work over decades.

Steve Schmidt, Seeds of Change and Bioneers Publishing ... From: Kenny Ausubel

I did two major book deals with Steve Schmidt, as well as working with him in many other capacities over a period since about 1991. I continue to work close and actively with him today. Steve served as my agent for my first book deal related to my work with Seeds of Change, the company I co-founded. I developed a proposal with him, and he was invaluable in the proposal development and refinement. He then went out to multiple publishers, and rapidly garnered very high interest that he leveraged into a pre-emptive offer from Harper Collins (1992). It was a two-book deal respectively for $125,000 for the Seeds of Change book, and $50,000 for a smaller book on Bioneers.

He further negotiated a groundbreaking package that included a 12-city book tour, and a large media campaign that resulted in interviews, reviews and articles from the NY Times and Wall Street Journal, to CNN, ABC and a huge volume of other press. He collaborated with the publisher and me on other innovative strategies. I do not recall the cost of the tour, but it will into six figures and was contractually obligated on top of the advance and money.

Steve built on the first deal for a subsequent two-book deal with Bantam that was at the top level of deals being done in that time, around 1994. He obtained a contract for $400,000 for the two books, a rarity for nonfiction. The deal was successfully completed including a substantial marketing budget...

I am currently working again with Steve on multiple media projects including the Bioneers e-book imprint where we are developing a stable of innovators and titles. He is also acting as agent for my new book, which is with publishers now.

I have found Steve to be not only highly effective, but also one of the smartest, most strategic and most editorially insightful people I’ve ever known. He has unwavering integrity, deep vision, and lots of street smarts.

His background includes many other areas including interactive digital agenting, work in the feature film business, and a major role in both the US and European Green Party platform.
