SJS/GreenPolicy360 founder: DYK? We know and yes we remember .... Beginning with "Earthrise", a first-ever color-film image of Earth captured almost magically in space ... Picture three astronauts on Christmas eve, December 24, 1968, focusing on tasks inside their Apollo spaceship on their mission to the moon... then, suddenly, there, outside the spaceship window, rising in the distance, is our Home Planet ....
The view, delivered back and broadcast globally, changed us with a shift in perception of who we *really are here on Earth, *planet citizens rolling thru space and in this historic moment we began to realize our role in a much bigger picture, a new Whole Earth cognitive vision, how we are all together, connected across borders and languages, journeying on ....

Steven Schmidt/SJS: Vorsorgeprinzip ... We started talking about vorsorgeprinzip in the 1970s. The first 'Earth Day' we organized was a 'teach-in' and we talked about vorsorgeprinzip and, in English, we translated this principle into a broader 'environmental protection' whole earth movement. Today, we call vorsorgeprinzip a "Precautionary Principle". In business, it's about being careful as we look at the consequences of our lives, our 'externalities'. Pollution of the 'ThinBlueLayer' is one example, destruction of biodiversity, life on earth is another. We were realizing Planet Earth is in our hands.
The Modern Environmental Movement began with eyes, minds and hearts opening to protecting life on Earth...

The idea of becoming and being, a "planet citizen" and "planet citizens" was forming in the late 1960s as our generation saw what hadn't been seen before. At first, the new visions were delivered from above, photos taken looking out of spaceship windows and given names like "Earthrise" (in 1968) and (in 1972) "Blue Marble".
The news shows, newspapers and magazines of the era shocked us with "Whole Earth" awareness.
- Some of us began to see ourselves as, yes, planet citizens.
SJS/GreenPolicy360 siterunner: Memories of the first "Earth Day"
Being there, in California, and listening to Senator Nelson tell us in California "thanks" for inspiring him to propose a first Earth Day event.
Picture yourself like me, a young student in East Los Angeles, a kid who was a fan of TV's Mr. Wizard's science experiments in the early years of television. Years later I'd meet, and become friends with and a science education book editor of Mr. Wizard, Don Herbert, in New York City. From East LA to NYC was a leap and a US Congressman set me on the road.
In the mid-1960s I was a high school student, a debater and the topic of the year in the mid-60s was nuclear weapons proliferation, coming soon after the 'duck & cover' close calls of the "Cuban Missile Crisis". I decided I would bike over to meet our newly elected Congressman, George Brown, and ask him what he was doing to prevent nuclear war. The meeting changed my life. George became a friend, then mentor and colleague of over thirty years and at GreenPolicy360 I've shared many highlights of George's story. Representative George E. Brown was, simply stated, a great figure in Earth science, environmental protection, and politics.
In my eyes George Brown was a model of a Planet Citizen for the ages.
George garnered a reputation in the 1970s/80s/90s as the "Big Science" guy in Congress. George was low key in his approach, but a true leader as he envisioned the need for science education and "science in the field and up above". He acted to create what I saw as "generational science."
From beginnings in 1969 and 1970 and a first Earth Day with George and along with Senator Nelson, then thru years of politics and science, I learned of and participated in foundational Earth science initiatives. In the US Congress Representative George Brown set in motion, shepherded and protected history-making initiatives. Throughout he shared plans, dreams, and stories. Accomplishments and memories of these eco-adventures are recalled here at GreenPolicy360 as Representative George Brown's green, environmental work continues on to today.
We encourage all who visit GreenPolicy360 to take time to appreciate George Brown as an original 'planet citizen' here -- https://www.greenpolicy360.net/w/George_E._Brown_Jr

December 21, 1968 ... Apollo 8 launches from the Kennedy Space Center, the first humans on the way to the Moon --- and a vision looking back at home that empowered the modern environmental movement.
Apollo's mission? To explore the Moon in preparation for a Moon landing. A surprise comes into view as the spaceship circles the Moon. A window view, Whole Earth awareness of ourselves as #PlanetCitizens. "Earthrise" ... a profound image, first by human hands taken of our home planet. We see our #PlanetEarth with new born eyes ...

- Aboard Apollo, December 24, 1968...
As the spaceship swings around the Moon...
unexpectedly the Earth rises in the Apollo ship's window and the astronauts are amazed at what is coming into view...
Astronaut Bill Anders is the first to see the Earth...
·········································································
Anders: "Oh, my God, look at that picture over there," he can be heard saying. "There's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!"
What happened next will sound familiar to anyone who remembers the days before digital cameras:
Anders (to astronaut Jim Lovell): "You got a color film, Jim? Hand me a roll of color, quick, would you?"
Lovell: "Oh, man, that's great! Where is it?"
Anders: "Hurry. Quick."
Lovell: "Down here?"
Anders: "Just grab me a color. A color exterior. Hurry up. Got one?"
Lovell: "Yeah, I'm lookin' for one. C368."
Anders: "Anything quick."
Lovell hands him the film just as Anders is heard saying, "I think we missed it."
But within seconds, Lovell sees the shot again in another window of the command module. He asks for the camera from Anders, who seems a bit defensive at having his role as mission photographer usurped.
Anders: "Wait a minute, just let me get the right setting here now, just calm down. Calm down, Lovell!"
Anders then gets the shot that has been reproduced innumerable times all over the world...

Intro/GreenPolicy360 Siterunner:
Steve Schmidt
For some 50+ years your GreenPolicy360 siterunner has worked in many varied ways to get the word out on the crucial importance of environmental security. From the first Earth Day to the first 1977-78 warnings from the new committee of science with the push from Congressman George E. Brown, through various career incarnations I have attempted to 'work the message', gathering (curating as it's now called) the best science and writing up and sharing key strategies and goals even against the odds. The risks we have identified and shared have now turned into a crisis.
Perhaps it is human nature to be overwhelmed, or what my teacher Hannah Arendt described in the 'Human Condition' as the realms of labor, work, and action. Many choose to go along to get along, and not act when the threats grow extreme, even existential. But to those who take the chance to make a difference and stand up and do your best to make changes that change the world for the better, I salute you for your bravery.
Now comes another warning from the international science community. This warning is dire. The latest news looms to such an extent as to be overwhelming, depressing and potentially driving us toward resignation and inaction, but it should not prevent us from action as Michael E. Mann's latest book, 'The Fight to Take Back Our Planet' argues persuasively.
Act with hope and not fear. Earth is in our hands. Take in the news, consider the science, then in your own way, act.
Act to make a positive difference. Don't give up, never give up.
